Six dead in Hudson River helicopter crash, reports say

Six people were killed after a helicopter crashed into the Hudson River in New York on Thursday, authorities said.

Emergency responders have recovered all bodies, including that of the pilot and two children, CBS News, the BBC’s US partner reported.

New York fire department said the crash, which happened closer to the New Jersey side of the Hudson River, was reported around 15:15 EDT (20:15 GMT).

Video circulating on social media shows some debris floating in the river. The cause of the crash remains unclear.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the investigation into the crash of the Bell 206, two-bladed helicopter, would be led by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The site of the crash is near Pier 40 in New York City.

A BBC journalist who was at the top of the World Trade Center at the time of the crash said there were about a dozen boats surrounding the site of the crash.

Tourists atop the building had gathered on one side of the tower to look down at the site of the crash, he added.

The last fatal helicopter crash in New York City was six years ago. In 2009, a helicopter carrying Italian tourists collided with a private plane over the Hudson River killing nine people.
