Pope Francis welcomed in remote Vanimo in Papua New Guinea

Pope Francis has been welcomed in Vanimo, on the coast of Papua New Guinea, where he donned a traditional Bird of Paradise feathered headdress.

He came to Vanimo at the invitation of local missionaries with the Catholic Institute of the Incarnate Word. They, like Pope Francis, the first pontiff from the Americas, are from Argentina.

Earlier he celebrated Mass in the capital, Port Moresby, which was attended by at least 35,000 people.

Pope Francis is visiting Papua New Guinea until Monday as part of a tour that first included a stop in Indonesia. He travels next to East Timor, then Singapore, before returning to Rome.
